Challengers: Istanbul, Italy, Spain and Austria
More news on PimPim's planned comeback schedule. Apparently he is hoping to play challengers in Istanbul, Italy, Spain and then Austria. He also says "It is 99.5 percent certain that I will not play the US Open." JOHANSSON ON COMEBACK TRAIL Joachim Johansson believes he is ready to return to top-flight tennis after recovering from shoulder surgery. The former Swedish number one underwent the operation last July and his only competitive outing since then was in San Jose in February, where he lost in the first round. However, the 24-year-old, who reached the US Open semi-finals in 2004, now feels the time is right for him to get back on the ATP Tour. "It (the shoulder) feels very good now, and I can fully serve during training for several consecutive days without feeling any pain," he told Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet. "I did not want to return until I felt ready for it, and I do now." Johansson, who has been ranked as high as ninth in his career, is set to make his return to action in Istanbul in two weeks, and intends to keep himself busy after that. "After Istanbul I will play challengers in Italy and Spain so it will be three tournaments in as many weeks," he added. "After that I will take a week off before I play a challenger in Austria." However, he has ruled out the possibility of playing in any of the Grand Slam events in 2006. Having already missed this year's Australian and French Opens plus Wimbledon - which is currently taking place - Johansson also admitted he was unlikely to make the trip to Flushing Meadows, saying: "It is 99.5 per cent certain that I will not play the US Open." |
